If you live in Little Rock, you may think that you'll have to drive for hours to get away from it all.  Not
true.  Lake Sylvia is just up Highway 10 (Cantrell Ave.) from Little Rock about 30 or so miles.  In the Ouachita National Forest, it's picturesque setting is calming and even includes a few old CCC structures.

Lake Sylvia is a small lake, so no big boats.  There's a dive platform and beach for the kids.  Half of the sites have hookups, and a new bathhouse was recently constructed.  Two trails, one of which is fully accessible, can keep you entertained when you're not messing around on the lake.  Take one of the
trails around to the dam for a nice view.  The Ouachita Trail also connects to some of the trails.

A store isn't close, so bring your stuff with you or take the 15 minute drive over to Perryville.

Lake Sylvia is one of those gems that exist close to the city yet seem so remote.  Why it is closed in October and stays locked until March is beyond me.  Most of the summer traffic there is local, but if you're looking for camping without R.V.'s and the hubbub of what that brings, keep driving on the gravel road that runs in front of Lake Sylvia campground and when you get to the top of the mountain, go right on Winona Forest Drive.  All along the well maintained gravel of Winona Forest Drive you'll find primative campsites in the National Forest that will give you peace and quiet. Of course there are no hookups and R.V.'s have a hard time making the trip.

Go to the home page, click on the campgrounds button.  You'll be able to pick from State Parks, USFS, COE, and NPS.  Just click on the type you want, and you'll see where to you want to go.  A drop down box lists available campgrounds.
